You may not race in the professional division of an event and then return to the age-group division in the same calendar year. This is a sanctionable offense that is monitored very closely.
For your reference, here is the clause from the USAT Rules that govern the Ironman World Championship:
Foreign Elite athletes holding an Elite license from their National Federation or having raced as an Elite in international events are prohibited from competing within age group categories as an age group athlete or for age group awards in events where there is an Elite division or awards. Prior to entering any USAT event, foreign athletes must disclose their elite/pro status and that failure to disclose such is cause for Disqualification and up to a one year suspension from USAT sanctioned events.
Additionally, should you qualify as an age-grouper for the Ironman World Championship, you will be required to sign a waiver that includes the following:
The undersigned athlete acknowledges that if he/she has raced as a professional or elite athlete at any triathlon event anywhere in the world within the current calendar year, he/she is not eligible to qualify in the Age Group category at any time during that year, for the Events. The undersigned athlete must qualify and earn a slot in the Professional/Elite division to compete in the Events. Failure to disclose correct status shall be cause for disqualification from the Events and may result in further sanctions.
If you plan on competing as an age-group competitor in 2011 Ironman World Championship, you may not consider the possibility of changing to elite/ pro status until after the event. You may find more information and requirements regarding Ironman Pro Membership on the Pro site at: http://www.ironmanpromembership.com <http://www.ironmanpromembership.com/>

Yes !!!
