Dr. Ibarguren Taus – a dubious Doctor
doping, Dr. Ibarguren Taus, mantova
After seeing Tom Boonen win four races in two weeks, and Philippe Gilbert winning four races in two weeks in 2011
I wondered if there was a common factor. It’s the world of cycling we live in nowadays.
The common factor is a team doctor called José Ibarguren Taus and after chatting a bit with some friends on twitter like @velofacts, @Festinagirl, @ponckster and @wmdhn I found out some things about the good doctor. Especially when his name popped up in the Mantova investigation my interest was caught.
Of course I have my thoughts and opinions about this doctor and his current employment at and the huge list of successes by Omega Pharma-Quick Step but I’ll stick to the facts and leave out the speculations.
Long career
José Ibarguren Taus is a Basque doctor who has been working in cycling for quite some time. His name however often appeared in combination with teams and riders with a dubious history. His employment list:
Omega Pharma-Quick Step: 2012
Omega Pharma-Lotto: 2010 & 2012
Saunier Duval: 2007, 2008 and 2009
Euskadi-Euskaltel: 2005
Lampre: 2002, 2003 and 2004
Festina & many more
If you look at this list this means
Dr. Ibarguren was part of Saunier Duval when Leonardo Piepoli and Riccardo Riccó were caught with CERA in the 2008 Tour de France. It means that he was part of the medical staff of Euskadi when Inigo Landaluze was caught with testosterone. And it means that he was a part of Lampre during the Rumsas affair.
In the 90s Willy Voets, the Festina soigneur, pointed towards Dr. Ibarguren and called him a doping doctor. Ibarguren denied this, of course.
Mantova
Why do I bring this up? The Mantova case is an Italian doping case and Dr. Ibarguren is one of the 32 people who have to report themselves to the Italian courts on July 13 for a hearing. The case in Mantova is about trafficking, prescription, administration and use of prohibited substances. It has been ongoing for some time but it now appears to be moving forward. July 13th is the date for the hearings in this case. With Dr. Ibarguren Taus.
